Day 1 - Seniors
I am in my room at the Paris Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip, mentally preparing for today's first day of the Seniors Tournament.
Freshly showered, shaved, dressed - no black suit and tie this year, mainly because the poor black suit had seen better days, with an unfortunate rip along the seam between the two legs. Yes, that would be the exposed rear end.
I did not realize this until I had gone to a chef's table with my family to welcome my mother to Pearland, where she has relocated from Arkansas. Six courses with wine, a wonderful time, a slow promenade through the main dining room, the picture of wealth and success, with my underwear peeking out from under my suit coat.
When I got home and undressed, I realized that this suit was not going to Las Vegas with me.
So, khakis and a black shirt with a blue jacket and sunglasses optional, depending on the composition of the table. If they are jerks, the glasses and headphones go on. If they are, as is usually the case, perfectly pleasant middle-aged individuals, then I will look the same. We will see.The trip here, besides the long delay on the tarmac to take off due to Houston lightning, was uneventful. So was purchasing the ticket - no long lines at 10:30 MST. Bert and I were attended by a very patient young man named Isaak who watched first me, then Bert, navigate the log in process for the new WSOP phone app, and then accept payment for this year's tournament.
Bert then ventured out to find a cheeseburger and I logged into the WSOP online poker app to play a tournament. The first one did not go well - $30 to enter and I was out pretty quickly with my JJ losing to 444. The second one - $100 to enter - was also a bomb, with my QQ losing to a runner-runner flush.
The third one - $88 to enter - ended up with a total of 200-plus players, and I finished 8th, making $300, and making up for the losses in the previous two tournaments and coming out ahead for the night. A good omen!
The app assigned me to Horseshoe White Table 544, Seat 2. Seat 2 is okay, two seats to the right of the dealer on the corner of the table. Hard to see me, easy for me to see everyone but Seat 10. I am going down there now, ready for a long day.
More to come soon!
